Ag in the Classroom
First graders in Mrs. Beals and Mrs. Johnson’s classes enjoyed learning about how food gets from the farm to the grocery store during Ag in the Classroom on April 15th. Dawn Weinberg , Hancock County Agricultural Literacy Coordinator led the activity. Students got to roll play all of the people and facilities needed to manufacture a tootsie roll. Included in the activity were a farmer, seed dealer, implement and fertilizer dealers, truck drivers, an elevator, a train and barge, refinery, manufacturer, warehouse and grocery store. Following the activity, each student got to enjoy a tootsie roll for a snack.
This lesson was in preparation for the first grade field trip to DOT foods in May. We have been corresponding throughout the year with our trucker buddy, John Louden, who drives for DOT foods. We will visit the DOT foods facilities including the learning center and the dry and frozen warehouses. We will also get to climb inside one of the DOT food semis.
