Close Encounters with a Tarantula

On Thursday, March 15th, the 5th graders enjoyed a visit from Mr. Tom Lawson, owner of Petland in Macomb. While there, he was able to answer a bunch of questions we had been wondering about concerning our class pet tarantula, Squash. Among other things, we learned the difference between a boy and a girl spider (just ask!), how poisonous they can be, if they are poisonous to humans, and their lifestyle habits.

Mr. Spider Expert

Our particular tarantula is a South American Rosehair, the kindest type of tarantula there is. This is the type that is often used to make movies because they can be worked with so easily. As a finale to the day, Mr. Lawson got Squash out of her cage and allowed us all to hold her. We were very brave and let Squash sit on our hands…even our most scared kids warmed up to her!!

After they were done, Ms. Painter and Mrs. Carnes took a turn as well. If you are interested, please stop by our room and we can fill you in on our new spider knowledge!
