La Harpe Community School District #347

NEWS RELEASE

The La Harpe School Board held a regular meeting Tuesday night, February 17th in the school district library.  Board members in attendance were Dan Horton, Cindy Wear, Mark Irish, Ricky Johnson, Rex Huston, Pam Campbell, and Deanna Stambaugh.  Also present were Supt. Jo Campbell, Jeanne Clayton, and visitors Joseph Wright, Arlynn Hitz and Melissa Johnson.

Principal McKeown reported that parents may now access their children's grades on the school website at the Power School page. 8th graders attended Freshman Orientation at Illini West on Feb. 3rd, boys' basketball is coming to a close, and girls' volleyball is going well. 5th-8th grade track practice will begin March 9th at Dallas City. The junior high student council sponsored a King and Queen of Hearts event in which boys or girls could obtain each others' "hearts" based on certain criteria-- Shelby Thompson and Chase Newlan were crowned for collecting the greatest number of hearts. Clarissa Cox, 7th grade, was named Champion of the La Harpe Junior High Spelling Bee with Jacob Burdg, 6th grade, claiming runner-up. The annual Jump Rope for Heart event was held in February and ISAT testing will begin the first week of March.

In other business, the board is looking at moving the rest of the classes and offices out of the 1928 building and over to the main building by the beginning of this next school year. The Dallas and La Harpe boards will be considering ideas to tailor the sports co-op agreement to meet the coming school year needs. The board is also considering adjusting the elementary school time and transportation routes to minimize the wait time before and after school for elementary and junior high students and more efficiently transport PreK-12 students after school. The 4 buses for which the lease term is ending and 4 other of the La Harpe school district's fleet will be replaced. The district policy manual is continually being updated to reflect new changes in school code. The preliminary school calendar for next year was accepted with final approval set for the March meeting. Judy Burt was approved as afternoon bus aide and Brian Lafferty for summer maintenance. Agendas and approved La Harpe Board of Education minutes may be accessed in the school district section of the La Harpe Eagles website. Regularly scheduled LCSD #347 board meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month in the school library at 7:00 p.m.
