Meet Mrs. Beals

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Sherry Beals, and I am looking forward to teaching first grade again this year. This will be my 11th year teaching 1st grade and my 14th year teaching at LaHarpe Elementary. Before teaching first grade, I taught kindergarten for 2 years and preschool for 1 year. I previously taught elementary special education in the Dallas City District for 10 years.
I have an Elementary and Special Education degree from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State, and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from WIU. I knew after my first few years of teaching, that I wanted to teach first grade. I absolutely love the process of learning to read. In no other grade will you see as much progress as you will during the first grade year.
I grew up in the Terre Haute area and graduated from LaHarpe High School. My husband Kevin works at Banks and Beals Funeral Homes. We have 3 children. Our daughter Madison is attending WIU majoring in Speech Pathology. Madison’s husband, Kevin Mershon, is a Marine serving in Iraq. We look forward to his return in November. We also have two sons. Mitch, a Junior, and Mason, a Sophomore, at Illini West. I enjoy attending church at the Terre Haute United Methodist Church, watching my sons play football, reading (especially books about Abraham Lincoln), solving puzzles, walking, and spending time with my family.
I look forward to getting to know your child, and starting him or her on the path to a lifetime love of reading.
