School Safety Drills

September 05, 2019

As part of our school ·safety plan, faculty and staff have been trained in various drills. These include fire drills, tornado drills, bus safety, lockdown procedures, and active shooters. These drills are required by state law. We work with the Hancock County Police Department, our local police department, and the fire department.

The fire department will be here to talk to elementary students about fire safety and for the students to go through the smokehouse on October 4th. We will have a fire drill with the fire department. We will also be going through ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evaluate) training with the Hancock County and La Harpe Police Departments. The students will learn about ALICE during school on Monday, September 23rd and we will practice a drill on Tuesday, September 24th If we had a  situation (fire, gas leak, crime, etc.) in our buildings we would need to relocate in a different location as our building would become unsafe. We will be practicing getting the students to the location (La Harpe Club House) and the procedures we would use to sign students out to their parents from that location. We realize in a real situation that this would be a chaotic event for students, staff, and parents.

We want to practice so if an event happened, we are prepared to handle the situation.
Faculty and staff will-assist students and be present with students at all times during the drill.

Please contact me or Dr. Lee should you have any questions.

Sincerely

Sara Ryner, Principal
